Course Overview:
International kitchen porter staff tend to have fewer opportunities at work to improve their language skills and yet, this is what can hold them back from developing themselves and being able to take on more responsibility over time.
This course is designed specifically for kitchen porter staff in hotels in Ireland, both to help with their contribution to an efficient kitchen team, as well as their own professional development.
The course covers the basic and fundamental skills for communicating in English (both linguistically and culturally), essential language for their roles, and self-learning techniques specifically aimed at helping them to continue to improve their communication skills in English
over time.
This course is aimed at:
This course is aimed at international team members working as kitchen porters in hotels in Ireland.
Please note: Trainees must have some basic understanding of English already, so that they will be able to follow the course content.
To help determine if the proposed trainee has a suitable level of English for this course, a ‘basic understanding’ here can be defined by:
– They can communicate using familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases
– They can introduce themselves and others
– They can ask and answer simple questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have
– They can follow simple instructions with low dependence on visuals or body language to support comprehension
– Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help
Team members who cannot do all of the above are not suitable for this course.
After this course staff will:
- develop knowledge of vocabulary and common language related to their kitchen porter roles
- be able to communicate basic needs, requests and issues related to their role in the hotel
- understand some of the fundamental communication norms in Irish culture to aid with understanding
- be able to engage in common workplace interactions with colleagues and managers
- have more confidence speaking English, regardless of their current level
- have a greater number of skills for self-learning to continue to improve their communication skills in English
- develop a mindset towards their English skills that enables continued improvement and professional growth
Support your kitchen porter staff to develop their communication skills and contribute to an efficient kitchen team and develop professionally!
